Gas-phase ion chemistry studies and densityfunctional calculations reveal that the structure ofCoCF3+ is really a[FCo+···F2C] ion-dipole complexwithelectrostatic bonding between FCo+ and CF2.The reactions of CoCF3+ withC3-C7 alkanes, alkenes, andotherreagents, such as benzene, water, and acetonitrile, yieldpredominantly CF2 displacement products. Thisrepresents the first case of gas-phase C-F activation by barecobalt ions.
