The elusive parent inorganic ethylene H2sub>GeGeH2sub> has been isolated in the form of a stable complex for the first time via donor鈥揳cceptor coordination with suitable Lewis base/acid combinations (LB路H2sub>Ge-GeH2sub>路LA; LB = N-heterocyclic carbene or N-heterocyclic olefin; LA = W(CO)5sub>). The nature of the bonding in these species was investigated by density functional theory calculations and revealed the presence of polarized Ge鈥揋e covalent 蟽-bonds within the H2sub>Ge鈥揋eH2sub> arrays and dative Ge鈥揅 interactions between the digermene and the carbon-based Lewis bases.
