A suite of five ephedra-containing dietary supplementStandard Reference Materials (SRMs) has been issued bythe National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)with certified values for ephedrine alkaloids, synephrine, caffeine, and selected toxic trace elements. The materialsrepresent a variety of natural, extracted, and processedsample matrixes that provide different analytical challenges. The constituents have been determined by multiple independent methods with measurements performedby NIST and by three collaborating laboratories. Themethods utilized different sample extraction and cleanupsteps in addition to different instrumental analyticaltechniques and approaches to quantification. In addition,food-matrix proximates were determined by NationalFood Processor Association laboratories for one of theephedra-containing SRMs. The SRMs are primarily intended for method validation and for use as controlmaterials to support the analysis of dietary supplementsand related botanical materials.
