Carbon nanotubes can be functionalized via amidation and esterification of the nanotube-bound carboxylic acids. The solubilityof these functionalized carbon nanotubes makes it possible tocharacterize and study the properties of carbon nanotubes usingsolution-based techniques. Representative results concerning thesolubility, dispersion, defunctionalization, and optical propertiesof the functionalized carbon nanotubes are presented. Severalexamples for the use of functionalized carbon nanotubes in thefabrication of polymeric carbon nanocomposites, the probing ofnanotube-molecule interactions, and the conjugation with biological species are highlighted and discussed.
