Sorption and Degradation of the Herbicide 2-Methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol under Aerobic Conditions in a Sandy Aquifer in Vejen, Denmark
文摘
A pulse (7 days) and a continuous (216 days), naturalgradient field injection experiment with herbicides, including2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol (4,6-dinitro-o-cresol, abbreviatedDNOC), and a bromide tracer were conducted in ashallow, aerobic aquifer near Vejen, Denmark. The pulseand continuous plume were monitored in a dense, three-dimensional monitoring network installed in the aquiferdowngradient of the injection. The sorption and degradationof DNOC were evaluated based on moment analysis ofbreakthrough curves, cross sections, and snapshots of theDNOC plume and supported by results from laboratoryexperiments. Significant and spatially variable sorption ofDNOC (Kd range, 0.10-0.98 L/kg) was observed due toa specific binding of DNOC to clay minerals. The spatialvariation was mainly a result of variation in pH, with strongersorption at lower pH, whereas other factors such ascation composition on the solid matrix appeared to benegligible. Significant degradation of DNOC in the aquiferwas revealed by moment analysis of data from thecontinuous field injection experiment. Degradation ofDNOC in the field was slow and/or subject to long lagphases, and the data suggested spatially varying degradationpotentials. This was supported by the laboratory experiments. The potential for natural attenuation of DNOC in aerobicaquifers appears promising.
