The anodic oxidation of tetraphenylhydrazine (1) andvarious 5,6-dihydrobenzo[c]cinnolinederivatives(2-10) in liquid SO2 andCH2Cl2 was studied by cyclic voltammetryat different temperatures. All compoundscould be oxidized to their respective dications and in some cases totheir trications. The unusual results indicate ahigh internal reorganization energy during the first oxidation step.X-ray structure determinations and other findingsreveal that the electron transfer reactions are accompanied bystructural changes of the molecular framework. Themechanism of oxidation will be dicussed in terms of different variants.Digital simulations and experimental datagive strong evidence for an EiE-DISPmechanism.
