Particle number concentration and particle matteremissions from an indirect injection diesel light dutyvehicle are statistically examined to reveal significantdifferences using eight nonoxygenate, one oxygenate, andthe reference fuel. All fuels are of very low sulfur (<43ppmw) and aromatics (<23.7% vol.) concentration. Analysisof variance is applied on particle samples collected fromraw exhaust by an Electrical Low Pressure Impactor and onfilter measurements conducted in the dilution tunnelover the Urban and the Extra Urban Driving Cycles. Statisticallysignificant increase on both the number and the mass ofemitted particles is established with increasing sulfur andaromatics content accompanied by a marginal increaseof the mean particle size. Total number differs by ~3 timesand mass by ~50% between the most and least refinedof the fuels tested. Finally, use of the oxygenate fuel providesa ~20% reduction of both the mass and the numberover an equivalent, nonoxygenated fuel.
