Carbon-coated fcc cobalt nanocrystallites produced by the carbonarc method havepractically no activity as catalysts for O2 reduction inH2/O2 polymer electrolyte fuelcells. This material, containing 17.0 wt % Co, was activated by apyrolysis step at 1000 C in Arcontaining acetonitrile vapor. When it was used at the cathode ofa single fuel cell element,it provided an initial current of 0.10 A/cm2 mg of Co at0.5 V and 50 C. This currentdecreased by 40% after 300 h. Only a fraction of thecarbon-coated metal in the initialmaterial was activated by the pyrolysis treatment. XPS and TEMcharacterizations wereperformed on the catalyst at various stages of itspreparation.
