The synthesis and structural characterization of the neutral diamagnetic organometallicdicarboxylic acid [Cr

5COOH)
2] (
1) is reported. Oxidation of
1 by oxygen leads toformation of the paramagnetic dicarboxylic acid cation [Cr
I(
6-C
6H
5COOH)
2]
+ (
2), which hasbeen isolated as the [PF
6]
- salt in two crystalline polymorphic modifications, a monoclinicform

and a triclinic form

. The neutral zwitterionic form [Cr
I(
6-C
6H
5COOH)(
6-C
6H
5COO)] (
3) has been obtained in a cocrystal with [NH
4][PF
6] upon treatment of the acid salt[Cr
I(
6-C
6H
5COOH)
2]
+[PF
6]
-with ammonia. The hydrogen bonding interactions establishedby the neutral and cationic acids are discussed and compared with those observed in thezwitterionic form and in the related complexes [Fe
II(
5-C
5H
4COOH)
2] and [Co
III(
5-C
5H
4COOH)
2]
+[PF
6]
-.
