The organotin compound(5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)tin tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate(1)has been synthesized from a reaction between (pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)tin chloride and lithiumtetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate. This cation proved tobean effective Ziegler-Natta -olefin cocatalyst.Activitiesfor ethylene polymerizations using dimethylzirconoceneand 1 were 7.3 × 105 g of PE/(mol of1·[C2H4]·h) at20deg.gif">C and 1.2 × 106 g of PE/(mol of1·[C2H4]·h) at 70deg.gif">C.This system was also effective for the polymerizationofpropylene. Activities usingrac-ethylenebis(indenyl)dimethylzirconium with the tin cation were 3.0 × 105gof PP/(mol of1·[C3H6]·h).Activities increased markedlywhen using zirconocenedichlorides/tri(i-butyl)aluminum/1. Activities for ethylene polymerizationusingzirconocenedichloride/tri(i-butyl)aluminum/1 at 20deg.gif">Cwere 7.0 × 106 g of PE/(mol of1·[C2H4]·h).Activitiesfor the polymerization of propylene usingrac-ethylenebis(indenyl)zirconiumdichloride/tri(i-butyl)aluminum/1at 20 deg.gif">C were 5.4 × 106 g of PP/(mol of1·[C3H6]·h).
