New highly cross-linked polysiloxanes were prepared by sol-gelpolymerization of 1,6-bis(diethoxymethylsilyl)hexane (1) and1,4-bis(diethoxymethylsilyl)benzene (2).Hydrolysisand condensation of 1 and 2 under acidic andbasic conditions with 4 equiv of water led tothe rapid formation of hexylene- and phenylene-bridged polysiloxanegels. The dry gels(xerogels) were intractable, insoluble materials that were noticeablyhydrophobic, exhibitingno swelling in organic solvents or water. Most of the xerogelswere high surface area, mesoporous materials. Hexylene-bridged polysiloxanes preparedunder acidic conditionswere always nonporous regardless of whether they wereprocessed to afford xerogels orsupercritically dried as aerogels. Hexylene-bridged polysiloxanesprepared under basicconditions and all of the phenylene-bridged polysiloxanes weremesoporous with surfaceareas as high as 1025 m2/g.
