A methanol extract from
Dioscorea japonica showed asuppressive effect on
umu gene expression ofthe SOS response in
Salmonella typhimuriumTA1535/pSK1002 against the mutagen 2-(2-furyl)-3-(5-nitro-2-furyl)acrylamide (furylfuramide). The methanolextract from
D. japonica was re-extracted with dichloromethane,
n-butanol, and water, respectively. The suppressive compoundsin the dichloromethane extract fraction were isolated bySiO
2 column chromatography and identifiedas (+)-

-Eudesmol and paeonol were assayed with the mutagen3-amino-1,4-dimethyl-5
H-pyrido[4,3-
b]indole(Trp-P-1), which requires liver metabolizing enzymes, and showedsuppressive effects on the SOSinduction of the mutagen. (+)-

S.
typhimurium TA100, whichindicated that these compounds showed antimutagenic activity. Keywords:
