A series of 1-[alk(en)ylsulfinyl]propylalk(en)yl disulfides (
-sulfinyl disulfides) of structureRS(O)CHEtSSR', R, R' = Me, (

n-Pr, and CH
2=CHCH
2, termedcepaenes, have beensynthesized by a variety of routes including oxidation of1-[alk(en)ylthio]propyl alk(en)yldisulfides,RSCHEtSSR', termed deoxycepaenes. The cepaenes are identical tocompounds isolated fromhomogenates of onion (
Allium cepa) and tocompounds identified in these homogenates by liquidchromatography/mass spectrometry, while the deoxycepaenes are identicalto compounds found in
Allium distilled oils and in other materials. Theantithrombotic activities for several cepaenes arereported.Keywords: Allium chemistry; onion (Allium cepa); a-sulfinyl disulfides;cepaenes; antithromboticcompounds
