Growth and Structural Characterization of Rb3Yb2(PO4)3: A New Material for Laser and Nonlinear Optical Applications

We report the synthesis of a new stoichiometric Yb compound, Rb3Yb2(PO4)3, by high-temperaturesolution methods. This is the first material of the A3IB2III(XVO4)3 family containing a lanthanide elementand the only one that shows optical activity. We resolved the structure of Rb3Yb2(PO4)3, which crystallizein the cubic system, space group of symmetry I213 (a = 16.8700(10) Å, Z = 16), and studied its evolutionwith the temperature. The thermal expansion coefficient of Rb3Yb2(PO4)3 is mages/gifchars/alpha.gif" BORDER=0> = 8.94 × 10-6 K-1. Thiscompound melts incongruently at 1450 K. The second-harmonic generation efficiency of the Rb3Yb2(PO4)3,although limited as a result of the crystal not presenting birefringence, was at least similar to that ofpotassium dihydrogen phosphate.
