We report the synthesis of a new stoichio
metric Yb co
mpound, Rb
3Yb
2(PO

3, by high-te
mperaturesolution
methods. This is the first
material of the A
3IB
2III(X
VO
4)
3 fa
mily containing a lanthanide ele
ment
and the only one that shows optical activity. We resolved the structure of Rb
3Yb
2(PO
4)
3, which crystallizein the cubic syste
m, space group of sy
mmetry
I2
13 (
a = 16.8700(10) Å, Z = 16),
and studied its evolutionwith the te
mperature. The ther
mal expansion coefficient of Rb
3Yb
2(PO

3 is

melts incongruently at 1450 K. The second-har
monic generation efficiency of the Rb
3Yb
2(PO

3,although li
mited as a result of the crystal not presenting birefringence, was at least si
milar to that ofpotassiu
m dihydrogen phosphate.
