BaGe₅ constitutes a new type of intermetallic clathrate obtained by decomposition of clathrate-I Ba₈Ge₄₃₃ at low temperatures. The crystal structure consists of characteristic layers interconnected by covalent bonds. BaGe₅ is a semiconducting Zintl phase.
