The synthesis of a DNA-cutting agent that conjugates anellipticine chromophore and a copper complexof bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine, referred to as a salen,is reported. The presence of the salen·Cucomplex allows cleavage of DNA via oxygen-based radicals, and theellipticine moiety serves as aDNA anchor. Spectroscopic measurements indicate that theintercalation geometry of the ellipticinechromophore is preserved with the hybrid. The cleavage is muchmore efficient with the conjugatethan with the Schiff base copper complex alone.
