Initial results of introducingLa2O3 into zinc titanate, a potentialregenerable desulfurizationsorbent, to reduce the spalling of zinc titanate and other similar typemixed metal oxide sorbentsused in hot coal-derived fuel gas desulfurization are presented.Sorbents were tested in a benchscale high temperature-low pressure fixed bed reactor using simulatedcoal-derived hot fuelgas and then removed for analysis. No signs of spalling orphysical degradation after five cycleswith steam regeneration was observed. The reactivity and capacityof the sorbent wascomparable to standard zinc titanate sorbents. Primary analysisconsisted of scanning electronmicroscopy/ energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy, diffuse reflectanceinfrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, total sulfur analysis, andX-ray diffraction.
