The antimalarial mechanism of qinghaosu (artemisinin) has beena problem since the late 1970s. During the past decade, severalmolecular level theories were postulated. However, their furtherdevelopment has been very difficult. By looking into the QHScleavage process and all possible reaction paths available to theresulting transient radicals, the present commentary reveals thosemajor hidden problems with the existing theories and tries toidentify some essential features of the parasiticidal events that maytake place within the intraerythrocytic malaria parasite. A seeminglymore reasonable theory is also introduced.
