Irradiation of1,4-bis(pentamethyldisilanyl)butadiyne (BPDB) in methanol yields two 1:1 photoaddition products (1 and 2) and one 1:2 photoadduct(3).Adduct 1 is the primary photoproduct while 2and 3 arethe secondary products, 3 being formed via twosilacyclopropene intermediates. Irradiation of BPDBwithacetaldehyde and acetone in deaerated methylene chloride yields only 1:1 photoadducts (4-6),probably dueto the steric effects of the initially formed 1-oxa-2-silacyclopent-3-ene ring preventing the formation of thesecond silacyclopropene intermediate from the 1:1 photoadducts.
