5-(2-Pyridyl)-2,4-pentadiyn-1-ol was polymerized overNbCl5- or TaCl5-based catalystsfollowed by pyrolysis to obtain graphite-like pyropolymers. Theblack metathesis polymer,poly[5-(2-pyridyl)-2,4-pentadiyn-1-ol], has the structure of afully conjugated backbone andwas converted into a polyacene-based polymer having pyridyl pendantgroups. Thepyropolymers prepared by vacuum pyrolysis over 700 C have nitrogenatoms incorporatedinto graphene sheets. The polymers were characterized by elementalanalysis, TGA, FT-IR, laser Raman, NMR, XPS, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmeddesorptionexperiments, charge/discharge experiments, and SEM and TEMstudies.
