Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans(PCDF) in dairy milk predominantlyoriginate from contaminated fodder ingested by the cows. In thepresented field study transferrates were determined for 12 2,3,7,8-chlorosubstituted PCDD/F on theirpathway from atmosphericdeposition onto grass and into the milk of dairy cows. Samples ofaerial deposition and fodderwere collected simultaneously over periods of 35-100 days; milksamples were taken at the ends ofthese sampling periods. In the transfer from air onto fodder about35% of the atmospheric PCDD/Ffallout as determined by passive sampling using Bergerhoff vessels wasretained on the grass. Nocongener specificity was observed in this transfer step. Thelevels in atmospheric fallout and ingrass varied considerably among single samples, whereas the PCDD/Fconcentrations in milk wererather constant. However, the averaged transfer rates from grassto milk were in good accordancewith data reported in the literature. Keywords: PCDD; PCDF; atmospheric deposition; grass; cow'smilk
