Measurements of OH reactivity (i.e., OH loss rates) in thetroposphere are essential for discussing troposphericOH photochemistry. In July and August 2003, we observedthe total OH reactivity in a suburban area of Tokyo.More than 90% of the data of the measured OH loss rateswere higher than the calculated values with simultaneouslymeasured concentrations of various trace species eventhough the rate coefficient of the OH + NO2 reaction wasmeasured by us. We concluded that this discrepancy isdue to the existence of unmeasured volatile organiccompounds (VOCs). We estimated the potential of thephotochemical ozone production in the case of includingthe unknown species as VOCs and excluding the missingsink, respectively. When the unknown species wereincluded as VOCs, the potential increases from 32% to88%. This result indicates the photochemical productionrates of ozone in the urban air are substantially greater thanexpected.
