Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is growing in importanceas a gasoline oxygenate and octaneenhancer. Its gasoline blending properties are superior to methyltert-butyl ether (MTBE), andits semirenewability is attracting subsidies from many governments.Synthesis of ETBE viareactive distillation offers advantages of higher conversion, improvedenergy efficiency, and lowercapital costs. A dynamic simulation, based on the MESH equationswith supplementaryequations to model the main chemical reaction, was developed usingSpeedUp. The simulationswere then utilized for the study of transient open-loop responses andfor control system design. The control of a reactive distillation column presents severaldifficulties not normally associatedwith distillation, and dynamic simulation proved to be the ideal toolfor the study and resolutionof these problems. Some general recommendations for the control ofreactive ETBE columnsare made, including the need to address control issues early in thedesign process to recognizeimplications on process equipment design.
