An integrated collection and vaporization cell has beendeveloped to provide automated, 10-min resolution monitoringof fine particle nitrate in the atmosphere. Particles arecollected by a humidified impaction process and analyzedin place by flash vaporization and chemiluminescentdetection of the evolved nitrogen oxides. Particle collectionefficiency was measured between 95% and 100% forparticles above 0.1 m. Evaporative losses for ammoniumnitrate were 2 ± 4%. Average nitrate values from theautomated system were compared to traditional denuderfilter measurements in three cities, with correlationcoefficients of greater than 0.97 and regression slopesranging from 0.96 to 1.06. The detection limit is governedby the field blank, which for the Los Angeles area was 0.4g/m3. The system operated unattended for days at atime, with data recovery of 97%.
