Positive and negative thermal ionization ion mobilityspectra (TI-IMS) of some sodium and potassium halidesare reported here. The data provide the first measurementof the thermal ionization ion mobility spectrometry ofinorganic compounds. A thin Nichrome filament was usedas a thermionic ionization source. Sample was directlydeposited on the filament, where it was heated andionized. Each salt produced a different ion mobilitypattern, but all sodium salts spectra were common in theirfirst peak. This peak differs from the common peakobserved in the spectra of potassium salts. The drift timeof the second peak in all spectra was found to be linearlydependent on the size of the counteranion of the salt.Negative thermal ionization ion mobility spectra of alkalihalides were also observed. An alkali halide salt (MX), ingeneral, produced its own anion as well as some heavierions that are thought to be hydrated X-(MX)n species. Thecapability of the method in quantitative analysis wasdemonstrated by measuring potassium impurity in sodium bromide. A detection limit of 0.01% K+ in NaBr anda linear rage of 3 orders of magnitude were obtained. Theresults from this study suggest that TI-IMS has potentialas a field technique for the detection of some elements insamples.
