The absorbents for SO2 and NO from flue gas wereprepared from calcium hydroxide, calciumsulfate, silicic acid, and aluminum hydroxide. The effects of thecomposition of the absorbentare studied on the activity for the absorption of SO2 andNO and on the structure of the absorbent. The activity for the absorption of SO2 and NO markedlyincreased with the content of silica inthe absorbent up to 40%. The formation of calcium silicate issuggested to be predominant ina high concentration of silica, while the formation of ettringite wasobserved by the XRD onlyfor the absorbent containing silica below 30%. The distributionof the sulfur and nitrogencompounds in the absorbent revealed by XPS suggests that adsorbednitrogen compounds aregradually replaced by sulfur compounds as the reactionproceeds.
