The growth rate kinetics of crystallization of aluminumtrihydroxide from caustic aluminatesolutions of aluminum-air batteries are studied in a laboratory batchisothermal precipitator.A method using high seed charges varying from 200 to 800 kg ofAl(OH)3 per m3 of aluminatesolutions is developed for the rapid determination of kinetic constantsof the crystal growthrate expression. Thus, it is shown that growth rate increases withthe square of thesupersaturation, and the temperature effect on the growth rate followsan Arrhenius relationwith an activation energy term of E/R = 8164 K.It is also shown that the growth rate ofaluminum trihydroxide is very sensitive to impurities in the aluminumelectrodes and to additivesin the electrolytic solution. This method can be extended to otherprecipitation reactionscharacterized by very low crystal growth rates.
