Layered double hydroxides containing Ni²⁺ and Al³⁺ have been synthesized by homogeneous precipitation throughurea hydrolysis. The nature of the interlayer species changes according to the treatment of the samples, formation of interlayer(NH₂)COO^- species being observed immediately after precipitation, which undergo transformation to carbonate after hydrothermaltreatment. Simultaneously, liberation of ammonia during decomposition under hydrothermal conditions gives rise to formation of[Ni(NH₃)₆]²⁺ species in solution.
