3,3′,5,5′-Tetrabromobisphenol A bis(2,3-dibromopropyl) ether (TBBPA-BDBPE) is a derivative of tetrabromobisphenol A and a widely used brominated flame retardant. TBBPA-BDBPE has been found in the environment in Asia and Europe, but this is the first report of its presence in the North American ambient environment. Here we report the concentrations of TBBPA-BDBPE in air samples collected from five sites around the Great Lakes as part of the Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network in 2013. The geometric mean concentrations of TBBPA-BDBPE ranged from 0.19 pg/m3 at Sleeping Bear Dunes to 1.3 pg/m3 at Chicago. The levels of TBBPA-BDBPE were significantly correlated with the number of people living and working within a 25 km radius of each sampling site, with the exception of Eagle Harbor, which is our most remote site. Positive correlations were observed between the levels of TBBPA-BDBPE and those of other halogenated flame retardants, such as BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-209, Dechlorane Plus (DP), pentabromobenzene (PBEB), 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EHTBB), and bis(2-ethylhexyl)-tetrabromophthalate (BEHTBP), all of which were measured in these same samples. The positive correlations of TBBPA-BDBPE concentrations with population and with levels of other halogenated flame retardants suggest that TBBPA-BDBPE shares similar sources and transport pathways with other flame retardants.
