Development of New Synthetic Membranes for Separation of Benzene-Cyclohexane Mixtures by Pervaporation: A Solubility Parameter Approach

Pervaporative separation of benzene from its mixture withcyclohexane over the entireconcentration range 0-100% benzene was studied using three copolymermembranes ofacrylonitrile. The other monomers in the copolymers were selectedon the basis of their solubilityparameter values relative to those of benzene and cyclohexane.These were styrene, methylmethacrylate, and vinyl acetate. For each copolymer ofacrylonitrile three different membraneswith different copolymer compositions were prepared. Copolymers ofacrylonitrile with methylmethacrylate and vinyl acetate showed good selectivity and moderateflux (0.075 kg/(m2 h) and60-70 with a membrane of 10 m thickness for a feed mixturecontaining 5% benzene). Acopolymer of acrylonitrile with styrene showed comparatively higherflux but lower selectivity.The selectivities obtained with these copolymers are better thanthose reported in the literature
