The ruthenium-catalyzed allylic oxidation of
-5-steroidswith
tert-butyl hydroperoxide to the correspondingunsaturatedketones was studied. During the scale-up to the pilot plantlevel, serious safety problems were detected, and the identifiedrunaway potential of this reaction was studied. Bymodifyingthe original oxidation procedure, it was possible toestablishthis reaction safely in the pilot plant at 17-kg scale.Furthermore, the procedure was applied successfully to severalothersteroids on the laboratory scale.
