A microstructured mixer was used to construct an isothermal continuous flow reactor with application to the study of vapor phase cracking kinetics. The reactor was able to heat up the reactant to the reaction temperature in a few milliseconds. The heat transfer performance of the microstructured mixer was investigated by direct measurement of the fluid temperature along the reactor. The performance of the reactor for kinetic studies was tested by investigation of the rate of pyrolysis of n-hexadecane. At temperature range of 600鈥?50 掳C, atmospheric pressure and mean residence time of 110鈥?70 ms, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor in Arrhenius equation for overall first order thermal cracking reaction were calculated as 235 kJ/mol and 1.1 脳 1013 s鈥?, respectively.
