An unprecedented two-dimensional water−chloride anionic {[(H₂O)₂₀(Cl)₄]^4–}_n network has been structurally identified in a hydrophobic matrix of the iron(II) compound [FeL₂]Cl₂·10H₂O (L = 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine). Its intricate relief geometry has been described as a set of 10 nonequivalent alternating cycles of different sizes ranging from tetra- to octanuclear {[(H₂O)_x(Cl)_y]^y–}_z (x = 2–6, y = 0–2, z = 4–6, 8) fragments.
