An unprecedented two-dimensional water−chloride anionic {[(H2O)20(Cl)4]4–}n network has been structurally identified in a hydrophobic matrix of the iron(II) compound [FeL2]Cl2·10H2O (L = 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine). Its intricate relief geometry has been described as a set of 10 nonequivalent alternating cycles of different sizes ranging from tetra- to octanuclear {[(H2O)x(Cl)y]y–}z (x = 2–6, y = 0–2, z = 4–6, 8) fragments.
