Many types of microgels have been proposed to reduce the water production and improve the oil recovery in mature oil reservoirs. Some of the microgels are used for conformance and mobility control purposes; others are applied for water shutoff. As one of these microgels, colloidal dispersion gel (CDG) can be used for conformance and mobility control. Different conclusions exist for whether or not CDG can propagate in the porous media based on experimental and pilot tests. In this study, we discuss two CDG types: first, the CDG that is preformed and, second, the one that is formed in situ. The preformed CDG is a stable microgel as well as STARPOL; hence, it is typically used for conformance and mobility control. We have developed a novel viscosity model for stable microgels, which is needed to accurately simulate such processes. The proposed viscosity model is a function of the microgel concentration and shear rate. The model was validated by matching with the published experimental data.
