Transverse eddy diffusivities of dispersed phase drops in a 0.30-mdiameter pulsed perforatedplate column were determined by two methods involving measurement ofchanges in local holdupover the column half cross sections, one of which was initially dropfree and the transfer of colortracer over the cross sections, in only one of which tracer was presentinitially. Both methodsindicated a relatively low diffusivity of ~10-4m2 s-1 for both emulsion and intermediateregionsof operation. However, similar tracer measurements of the radialdiffusivity for the continuousphase indicated virtually complete mixing at the inlet stage. Itis concluded that the reducedperformance of these columns with increase in diameter in previousreports must have beendue to initial maldistribution at the dispersed phase distributor atlow throughputs, and aproposal is made for a more suitable form of distributor.
