2H NMR spectra and interpretations are presented on aseries of samples, each consisting of a deuterium-labeledorganic pollutant (trichloroethylene, acetone, pyridine, benzene, or ethylene glycol) adsorbed on a soil component(montmorillonite clay or humic acid). Spectra wereobtained over a wide temperature range and using twovalues of the quadrupolar echo delay period. Computersimulations of line shapes resulting from various forms oflocal motion of C-2H moieties provide useful guidelinesfor interpreting the experimental results. In a few cases, detailed line shape simulations are given. This approach isattractive for elucidation of the detailed motional behaviorsof organic pollutants adsorbed in soil.
