Fourier Transform-Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR) massspectrometric studies of both cationicwater clustersH+(H2O)n,n = 1-70, and anionic water clustersX-(H2O)n,n = 1-30, X = OH, O, withacetone and acetaldehyde are reported. For the cations a sequenceof ligand exchange and fragmentationreactions results in "solvated proton" complex ion final products. In the anionicOH-(H2O)nclusters, on theother hand, an OH- catalyzed aldol addition of thecarbonyl compounds with a true covalent bond formationis observed. The anionic and cationic water clusters thus behavesimilar to basic and acidic aqueous solutions.
