We have isolated novel molluskan steroid receptortranscripts orthologous to vertebrate estrogen receptors(ERs) and estrogen receptor-related receptors (ERRs) fromthe freshwater snail Marisa cornuarietis. Radiolabeledligand binding analyses showed that neither recombinantreceptor protein specifically bound 17-estradiol overthe range applied (0.3-9.6 nM). These novel receptortranscripts have thus been designated mcER-like and mcERRrespectively. Quantitative PCR revealed mcER-like to beexpressed ubiquitously throughout a range of male and femalestructures studied, including neural and reproductivetissues. Highest absolute levels were seen in the male penis-sheath complex. The mcERR mRNA was also expressedubiquitously throughout all male and female tissues analyzedhere, with very low absolute transcript numbers infemale accessory sex structures compared to othertissues.
