The new cation [Sbb>7b>Sb>8b>Brb>2b>]³⁺ has a double-cubane structure and forms as the [AlClb>4b>]⁻ salt from the ionic liquid EMIMBr−AlClb>3b> (EMIM = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium) at 165 °C. The compound is noncentrosymmetric with space group P2b>1b>2b>1b>2b>1b> and exhibits second-harmonic and difference-frequency nonlinear optical response across a wide range of the visible and near-infrared regions.
