A new luminescence lifetime-based pH sensor system isdescribed. T
he system is based on [Ru(Ph

2+(DCbpy = 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine) immobilized ina mixed domain network copolymer utilizing hydrophobicregions in a hydrophilic, water-swellable, poly(ethyleneoxide) matrix. T
he metal complex binds irreversibly to t
hehydrophobic domains leaving t
he pH-sensing COOHsprojecting into an aqueous-rich poly(ethylene oxide) region. T
he complex shows a strong pH dependence of itslifetime (3-4-fold) and provides a usable pH range ofabout 3-5. T
