A novel procedure which employs colloidal imprinting and air stabilization of the mesophasepitch particles is proposed for the synthesis of mesoporous carbons. This procedure allowsone to control the degree of mesopore development during colloidal imprinting andcarbonization and, consequently, to synthesize carbon particles with surface and volumemesoporosity. Nitrogen adsorption studies show that the resulting carbons exhibit interconnected spherical mesopores and their microporosity is negligible.
