The article challenges the non-prototypical allomorphy hypothesis proposed by L. Janda and S. Dickey based on an analysis of the Russian semelfactive verbs with the suffixes -nu- and -anu-, and the prefix s-. In this connection, the paper provides an in-depth account of the semelfactive aspectual meaning from a typological perspective, gives an overview of the topic in Russian linguistics and offers a comparative consideration of the results of an empirical analysis of data gathered from both the National Russian corpus and a psycholinguistic experiment. This research has lead to the conclusion that the argumentation in favor of non-prototypical allomorphy based on the study of Russian semelfactive verbs is not sufficiently convincing and therefore does not give grounds to reject the notion of traditionally defined allomorphy.
