This essay examines Osvaldo Sorianos Una sombra ya pronto serás as a testimony of contemporary picaresque novel. Since in Latin American literature the motif of the journey has served as an aesthetic and ideological search for a center that is always elusive and problematic, my reading of the novel confirms this teleological disintegration and, consequently, the impossibility of a return home exemplified by a new type of postmodern picaro. This concept of existential exile is aggravated by the experiences of diaspora, violence and military regimes that have brutally transformed a continents way of writing, thinking, dreaming and moving. The goal of these picaresque wanderings is irrelevant because physical movement itself becomes the vital resistence to death, defeat and hopelessness.
