The present study investigated the prison climate before and after the construction of the new preventive detention building in Berlin. The subjective perception of the prison climate was measured using the Essen Climate Evaluation Schema from the perspective of individuals under preventive detention law and correctional officers. From the perspective of individuals under preventive detention, the prison climate in the new institution has improved but from the perspective of correctional officers this was not the case. Utilizing a comparative sample of individuals from a social therapeutic institution within the prison, it could also be shown that the prison climate in the newly constructed preventive detention center tended to approach that of the therapy unit. Moreover, the perception of a positive prison climate in both subsamples correlated with desirable attitudes towards treatment. Possible implications of the positive effects of prison climate known from the literature are discussed with reference to this special case of inmates under preventive detention.
