An approach toward TiO2 nanostructure growth with tunable properties: influence of concentration of titanium butoxide in a hydrothermal process

TiO2 thin films with tunable morphology and physical properties were prepared by varying the concentration of C16H36O4Ti (0.005, 0.008, 0.01 and 0.03 M) in a hydrothermal process. As the reaction concentration of C16H36O4Ti increased, the roughness and thickness of rutile TiO2 are increased, indicating that the structure transitioned from nanowires/nanoparticles to nanobelts with nanowires structure and finally to nanorods. The structural evolution was accompanied by considerable variations in the optical properties, wettability, and photocatalytic properties of TiO2. The vertically-oriented TiO2 nanorods prepared with 0.03 M titanium butoxide typically showed strong hydrophilicity and high photocatalytic efficiency (97.8 %) following UV irradiation. These findings show that specific TiO2 thin films with tunable properties can be prepared for decolorization of organic contaminants.
