The conceptualization of couple relationships as attachment bonds and the associated emotionally focused therapy (EFT) as a treatment for couples is presented. The most basic need in couple relationships is a secure emotional attachment. Conflicts in couples are perceived as an interruption of the attachment bond and arguments as a fight for the emotional responsiveness of the partner. This model of couple dynamics best integrates the results of research on dyadic emotion regulation and affective neuroscience as well as Gottman’s research on couple interaction. Emotionally focused couple therapy was developed by drawing on this knowledge and knowledge from microanalyses of therapeutic change processes in process research. With an effect strength of d = 1.3 in several meta-analyses EFT is currently the most effective method of couple therapy worldwide.
