The paper discusses Carl Mennickes thinking about religious matters in its biographical, historical and social horizons. Mennicke describes his own religious development beginning with his pietistic-christian experiences and ending with its transformation in metaphysical freedom. When in 1937 in the emigration Mennicke publishes his Sozialpädagogik this methaphysik of freedom is becoming a social theory against nationalsocialism. Mennicke regards in his Sozialpädagogik calvinism and lutherism, their relations to modernity and their enabling or not enabling of democratic practice. Religion in Mennickes thinking is an anthropological fact with different meanings for invarious christian issues.
