Transanal resection allows local resection of rectal tumours using basic instrumentation. It has been supplanted by microsurgery, more specifically via a dedicated rectoscope or a monotrocard port. Although classical transanal resection remains a valid option for very low rectal tumours, where microsurgery equipment does not offer a comfortable operative field vision, and where specific instrumentation is not mandatory for tumour site access.
