Knowledge regarding the clinical picture of multiple sclerosis (MS) has increased significantly and has become more differentiated in recent years. Consequently, the diagnosis of the disease is even more complex. Possible or definite preliminary stages of the disease, e.g., radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), are now also know in addition to the three classic progressive forms of MS (relapsing remitting MS, secondary progressive MS, primary progressive MS). An accurate medical history and a neurological examination are fundamental for each patient’s evaluation. With this information, it is possible to understand the results obtained from additional studies in a clinical context and to assess their plausibility. Magnetic resonance imaging studies also play a central role.
