The surgical procedures applied for benign and malignant diseases of the thyroid gland have changed radically over the last decades. We scrutinized the available guidelines for the nomenclature of thyroid surgical procedures. Surgical procedures of the past include enucleation, node excision, resection of the isthmus and subtotal lobectomy/thyroidectomy with unknown tissue remnant. Subtotal lobe/thyroid resection and Hartley-Dunhill resection are considered controversial nowadays. The terms subtotal lobectomy and subtotal thyroidectomy are imprecise and should be avoided. If a total thyroidectomy is not carried out, the surgeon should document the exact extent of surgery to each lobe. The acceptable operations for thyroid diseases are total thyroidectomy, near total thyroidectomy, hemithyroidectomy/ lobectomy, and near-total lobe resection.
